Teacher Says... (Large Group)

1-A-L-2

Purpose: Gain facility in recognizing and identifying numerals 1-10

Description: Students practice recognizing and identifying numbers by finding them when asked or shown the number.

Materials

  • Large Numeral Cards (1 – 10)
  • Numeral Cards (1-10) one set per student

What To Say and Do

  • 1

Provide the students with a set of numeral cards. Students place the cards randomly, faceup, on the floor in front of them.

  • 2

Tell students that they will need to use their listening skills to hear “Teacher says...” before doing what is asked. If they do not hear “Teacher says...” they will sit still.

  • 3

Support numeral recognition by using a prompt that names the numeral for student. Such as, "Teacher says . . . hold up your 4 card."

  • 4

After students respond, provide an opportunity for students to self-check their response by holding up the large numeral card for them to compare.

  • 5

After the students have had the opportunity to recognize their numeral cards, transition to using prompts promoting numeral identification. Start by showing them a numeral card and asking prompts such as, “Teacher says... What number is this?” After students respond, have them show their card then turn it facedown. When the students only have one card left faceup, have them turn to a partner and tell them what numeral it is.

  • 6

Wrap up the activity by showing students a number, asking them to say the number they see.

Variations

To incorporate more opportunities to identify numerals, tell the students to turn over certain numbers and leave a few still faceup. Have students pair up with a partner and tell each other what numerals are seen.
