Addition & Subtraction to 10: Strategies and Basic Facts

Learning Goal

Develop knowledge of a network of number relationships and apply that knowledge to addition and subtraction in the range 1 to 10

Learning Goal Description

An emphasis on number relationships facilitates a shift from count-by-one strategies to non-count-by-one strategies and supports a path to fluency for addition and subtraction facts to 10. The learning progression includes key combinations and partitions, relational thinking, strategy development, and targeted practice. Instruction advances from the use of physical models to the development of mental models. This knowledge creates a strong foundation for addition and subtraction to 20.

Pre-Requisite Knowledge

Students should have facility with the number words and numerals to at least 10. Students should be able to count visible items to determine the numerosity of a collection and to combine two small collections. Students might also be able to count to combine collections with the items concealed or use counting on to solve addition tasks. Sub-goal A : Know the combinations to make 5 and partitions of 5

Number pairs that go together to make 5 key combinations that become important reference points for reasoning about number relationships and developing arithmetical strategies. The instructional resources in this learning progression focus on developing fluency with these number bonds.
  1. Ask students for combinations of two numbers that make 5 (e.g., Tell me two numbers that go together to make 5… Tell me another two.). 

If students do not know these combinations, or need to count to solve, the resources for this sub-goal can provide support in designing instruction for these key combinations and partitions.
