Math Recovery® MRSp1 Award

The US Math Recovery Council® MRSp1 Tuition Award winners will receive Complimentary admittance into a scheduled Math Recovery® Specialist, Part 1: Intervention and Specialization in Number Learning for the Primary Grades (MRSp1). The entire tuition fee is included in this award. Please Note: airfare, hotel stay, and meals are not covered in this award.

The Math Recovery®: Intervention and Specialization in Number Learning for the Primary Grades (MRSp1) course develops specialist teachers to provide intensive mathematics intervention for students in grades K-2. As a yearlong course, the program develops teaching expertise in early math learning and includes topics of number word sequences, numeral identification, addition and subtraction counting-based strategies, structuring numbers 1 to 20, and conceptual place value. As a result of completing this course, professionals become certified Math Recovery® Primary Intervention Specialists with new tools for assessment and instruction in early numeracy.

Course Format and important elements:

  • 9 days of face-to-face instruction, throughout the year
      * 1 additional Fall MRSp1 course and face-to-face dates will be added soon.
  • eLearning components to maximize face-to-face times
  • Professional readings
  • Virtual cohort meetings and video shares
  • 100 hours of 1:1 video-taped teaching with students
  • 100 hours of reflecting on teaching
  • 1:1 coaching for assessment and teaching
  • Assessment project to show assessment techniques in administering and analyzing assessments
  • Teaching project to show student/professional growth and reflection
  • Teacher has two years to complete all requirements for MRSp1
  • Demonstrate proficiency in implementing Math Recovery® Guiding Principles

Who Should Apply?

Individuals who wish to deepen their understanding of early numeracy for the purpose of supporting students and teachers in the area of mathematics.

District considerations: The award provides the participant with the opportunity to attend a scheduled course. Outside costs, such as substitutes, transportation, lodging and food are the participants or districts’ responsibility.

There are also additional technology needs, that are the responsibility of the district for MRSp1 These technology items include but may not be limited to:

  • Desktop computer or laptop computer (ideal for traveling to training/recording lessons) Typically, teachers are issued a school computer. It is important the computer has web camera capabilities with video recording and streaming internet capabilities
  • Web camera (for virtual meetings)
  • Headphones (for virtual meetings and watching student video)
  • External hard drive for video storage
  • Video editing program

Award recipients will be asked to communicate to the US Math Recovery community and beyond on the impact they have had due to this award.

Application Criteria

Individuals must meet the following criteria, or their awards will not be considered:

  1. Narrative element-applications can be no more than 3 pages in length.
  2. Include an administrator letter, no more than 1 page in length.

To Apply: Provide a narrative that includes the following:

  • School and/ or District academic need (current state of mathematics)
  • What does the attendee hope to gain from the course?
  • Administration letter
    • Acknowledgement of support in allowing staff member to attend course
    • Acknowledgement of the District Considerations
    • Agreement to be debriefed by participant on their experience in this professional development course
