Sub-goal A: Form 10s and count by 10s

Developing knowledge of 10 as a unit and working with units of 10 is fundamental to operating in our base-10 system of numeration. Initial learning includes developing fluency with verbal sequences by 10 on the decuple (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 40, ...) and off the decuple (e.g., 4, 14, 24, 34, ...), both forwards and backwards. The instructional resources involve using individual items to form groups of 10 and connecting the verbal sequences by 10 to quantity, counting collections of 10s and incrementing or decrementing a collection by units of 10, on and off the decuple.

Home Communication and Engagement

Large Group
Instructional Activities

Around the Horn: Forward and Backward
Activity 5-A-L-1
Go To Around the Horn: Forward and Backward Activity

Purpose: Develop fluency with number word sequences involving multiples of 10

Description: Students rehearse the verbal sequence counting by 10s, saying the next number of the sequence in turn.

Clips in a Row
Activity 5-A-L-2

Purpose: Order non-sequential numerals

Description: Students apply knowledge of number relationships to collaboratively order numerals on a physical number line.

Making Ten
Activity 5-A-L-3

Purpose: Develop a conceptual understanding of a unit of 10

Description: Students count a large collection of bundling sticks by organizing them into groups of 10.

Scenarios Involving 10s
Activity 5-A-L-4

Purpose: Develop facility with forming groups of 10 and counting by 10s

Description: Students engage in problem solving tasks to determine how many groups of 10 are in a collection.

Undercover
Activity 5-A-L-5

Purpose: Gain facility when making increments and decrements by units of 10, on and off the decuple

Description: Students make increments and decrements by units of 10 as the teacher demonstrates with bundling sticks.

How Did We Get Here?
Activity 5-A-L-6

Purpose: Recognize patterns when incrementing and decrementing by 10, both on and off the decuple

Description: Students generalize number patterns and relationships when counting by one or more units of 10.

Small Group
Instructional Activities

Numeral Tracks
Activity 5-A-S-1
Go To Numeral Tracks Activity

Purpose: Gain facility with forward and backward sequences for multiples of 10, on and off the decuple

Description: Students use numeral tracks to rehearse forward and backward number word sequences for 10s, on and off the decuple.

Making and Counting 10s
Activity 5-A-S-2

Purpose: Develop facility forming groups of 10 and incrementing by 10s

Description: Students engage in building 10s from a collection of snap cubes and using the 10s to count the collection.

How Many Sticks?
Activity 5-A-S-3

Purpose: Develop and recognize collections as items grouped in units of 10

Description: Students will count a collection of sticks by bundling them into groups of 10.

Making Numbers
Activity 5-A-S-4

Purpose: Explore making increments and decrements of units of 10

Description: Students use arrow cards and bundling sticks to explore connections between the written form of numbers and a collection of items the numbers represent.

Numeral Roll
Activity 5-A-S-5

Purpose: Gain facility with identifying 10 more or 10 less from a given number

Description: Students use a numeral roll to identify 10 more and 10 less than a given number.

Teacher Says
Activity 5-A-S-6

Purpose: Develop flexibility incrementing and decrementing by 10s on and off the decuple

Description: Students make increments and decrements of 10s to determine the final number in a sequence without the support of a visual model.

Independent
Instructional Activities

I Like to Move It
Activity 5-A-I-1
Go To I Like to Move It Activity

Purpose: Sequence numerals by 10s

Description: Students sequence a series of numerals by 10s on and off the decuple.

1, 2, 3, DRAW 10!
Activity 5-A-I-2

Purpose: Make connections with the quantitative and symbolic aspects of number

Description: Students make connections between the symbols and quantities of number while working on incrementing and decrementing by units of 10.

Road Trip
Activity 5-A-I-3

Purpose: Increment and decrement by units of 10

Description: Students take a "road trip" by making increments and decrements of 10 forward and backward until they reach their destination.

Hit the 10s Target
Activity 5-A-I-4

Purpose: Increment and decrement by multiple units of 10

Description: Students increment and decrement from a number by multiple units of 10 in order to hit a target number.

Strike Out
Activity 5-A-I-5

Purpose: Increment and decrement by a unit of 10

Description: Students increment and decrement from a number by a single unit of 10.
